Liberec This city in the northwestern boarder region of the Czech Republic got for many years a classic, narrow gauge tramway, including an interurban to the eastern village of Jablonec. This public transport network is currently improved spectaculary. The old interurban is renovated and partly integrated with the excisting railway between Liberec en Jablonec. During the visit of LRA in August 2001 construction was in full speed.

In the city the transformation from narrow to standard gauge is vissible at many places. Since July 8 2001 line 2 is using standard gauge on its route between Kubelikova and Dolni Hanychov. The trams of type T3m are manufactered by the Tatra factory in Prague. This type is used in the Czech Republic and former Eastern Block countries on a large scale.

Nevertheless new type of rolling stock will be introduced in the nearby future. In 1996 a prototype of a new generation of trams has been tested.

Regiotram The rebuilding of the tramway of Liberec is the first phase of the development of a huge regional public transport network. The Jablonec line is rebuilt between Liberec and Vratislavice, while using the excisting railway on the next section. In Jablonec the line continues as a tramway in the urban area.

This integration of tram and train allows the tram entering the region as a train in the nearby future. The curent plan is ambitious. Extensions are planned from Jablonic to Harrachov (2010), and Jelenia Góra in Poland, as well as from Liberec to Zittau in Germany.
Including some branches and new routes in Liberec and Jablonic eventually 'Regiotram Nisa' will be developed, a system containing circa 115 kilometer.
October 2004: still working on the project. Though not sure if it will be a real 'TramTrain'-system after all. See also on this problem:
